Write an essay on one of the following essay topics. Formulate an argument using literary references, as well as textual or cinematic examples. Develop a specific thesis in answer to the essay questions using consistent references to one or two works.
Topic 1. Using examples from Jezebel, The Iliad, or any other films and course readings since the mid-term, discuss the connection of war and plagues. Why and how are characters made sick from living in a political state of lawlessness, rot and exploitation? What is the relation between the plague and the social context? How is the plague a way that moral pollution is portrayed? Is there a resulting “cure” and if not why?
Topic 2. Using quotes and specific examples from course texts and lectures prior to this assignment, write an essay on “The Cure at Troy” by Seamus Heaney. Who or what is it that needs curing? How is the myth of Hercules’ bow related to this poem? How is Philoctetes by Sophocles a symbol of both the fragility and strength of humanity? Why is this bow— now owned by Philoctetes— the “cure” for Troy? What is Seamus Heaney’s poem saying about being cured as not simply winning the Trojan war?
Topic 3: Discuss and/or compare the role of women in war and plagues in course readings of films since the mid-term. What are examples of female characters (Jezebel, Helen of Troy, Candace from Madame President, Jane Fonda) who witness, protest , or lead a culture through cultural sickness and how? Why have women traditionally been depicted as the passive objects of war and not activated subjects in war and/or natural disasters? How does Madame President in the chapter entitled “Contagion” fight Ebola? What responsibility does the United States have to Liberia and why? What symbolic, moral, social or political gender norms of history does Madame President and other course readings challenge and how?
