It is widely contested among Economic historians that the British Empire may or may not have been a waste of money or “philanthropy plus five percent”, however, many contend that the Empire built up obligations and resources that sustained Britain in the First and Second World Wars. This paper explores a niche in this literature concerning the notion of empire and its ability to command prestige and perpetuate patriotism within Britain in the years preceding World War 1. And whether the form of Nationalism created by being a part of such a far-reaching empire helped sustain the British throughout wartime as much as the direct resources from its colonies. In order to concretize such a notion, this paper will also investigate why the British working class was seemingly supportive of imperialism even though they bore the burden of its costs.
